Borage seed oil comes from the seeds of the borage plant, also known as starflower. This annual herb grows between 30 and 90 cm tall, with hairy, oval-shaped green leaves. Between May and September, the plant produces star-shaped flowers that start pink and usually turn bright blue. These flowers contain small black seeds (up to 6 mm in size), which are rich in borage oil, holding around 30% oil content.
To obtain the virgin oil, seeds undergo mechanical pressing and filtration, resulting in a clear, high-quality oil suitable for food and cosmetic applications. For the refined version, manufacturers may use hexane extraction to increase oil yield.
The main benefit of borage oil is its high content of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), which offers several health benefits. It serves as a potential alternative to fish oil, sharing similar properties, such as reducing inflammation, supporting circulation, and boosting the immune system.
Beyond its role in nutrition, borage oil is widely used in cosmetics. Its regenerating and moisturizing properties help combat skin aging, making it an excellent ingredient in skincare products, makeup removers, face lotions, day creams, massage oils, and hair treatments.
