The Berbers call the Argan tree the “Tree of Life” due to its many health benefits. It grows exclusively in southwest Morocco, reaching 8 to 10 meters tall. Its deep root system helps protect it from the harsh Sahara desert climate. The Argan orchards are a UNESCO-protected reserve.
Argan oil comes from the kernels of the Argan tree. Traditionally, production takes place only in Morocco, where the kernels are mechanically pressed into oil. The nuts are hand-cracked using ancient Berber techniques. Historically, Berber women’s cooperatives in rural Agadir have been responsible for harvesting and preparing the oil. Even today, it remains a key source of income for local communities.
Argan oil has a wide range of applications. It is a highly popular ingredient in cosmetic products, including skincare, hair care, and beauty formulations. Many companies use it to enhance their product labels due to its anti-aging benefits. The oil contains high levels of squalene, which helps combat skin aging.
In culinary use, the oil undergoes roasting before pressing, giving it a rich, roasted flavor and aroma. Its balanced fatty acid composition includes unsaturated acids, vitamin E, and omega fatty acids, making it a nutritious choice.
